INF7578 - A Cloud Service Provider's Success Story: Adoption of vSphere with Operations Management Clouditalia's decision to exclusively adopt the VMware cloud stack is still proving a winner. This is in thanks to the integration of products - including direct contact with customers (vCloud Director), management infrastructure (vCenter), and analysis and prediction tools (vRealize Operations and vRealize Log Insight). As a cloud service provider, we must make difficult sizing choices in advance to avoid clipping the wings of those customers who have frequent and rapid expansion needs. vRealize Operations enables us to check the duration of our investment. We can review the medium- to long-term future by comparing revenues from this extension, without having to exaggerate or underrate them. Using this tool to analyze the root cause gives us the opportunity to optimize structure and stop repeating mistakes that lead to anything from individual customer outages to global outages. Last, but certainly not least, is optimization. Thanks to vRealize Operations, we are able to better communicate with our customers. This provides us with needed data so we can confidently notify customers who are wasting resources as well as those who are underpowered. Clouditalia owes much of its success to the ability to attend to every customer, regardless of the size of his or her business. Much of the credit is due to vSphere with Operations Management. Customers recognize this value in Clouditalia and appreciate that, unlike with other larger groups, they aren't treated in "default mode" as a mere number. CTO8120 - Debunking the Myths about Virtualizing High Performance Computing If you have islands of bare-metal infrastructure scattered around your company or institution, there is a good chance these resources are used to run extremely compute-intensive workloads in support of your organization's engineers, researchers, and scientists. These workloads -- often called High Performance Computing (HPC) or Technical Computing workloads -- run on clusters or grids and solve important (and large) technical problems, often in parallel. Over three million CPU sockets worth of server processors are sold to run these engineering, science, and research workloads every year. And yet relatively few of these processors are virtualized. Many believe these workloads cannot be virtualized due to performance issues and that there is little or no value in virtualizing these environments. In this session, two HPC experts from the VMware Office of the CTO will debunk both of these myths by presenting detailed performance data showing which workloads run best when virtualized and explaining in detail why customers are beginning to virtualize these environments and what approaches are being used to do so. Both vSphere and vRealize Automation-based approaches will be discussed, as will the potential uses of virtual SAN. Performance topics will include: throughput applications, message-passing applications, use of specialized interconnects like InfiniBand, compute accelerators such as nVidia GPUs and Intel Xeon Phi, and parallel file systems. Background information about HPC workloads and environments will be included to help non-specialists understand these concepts and to facilitate informed discussions with your organization's HPC infrastructure owners when you return from VMworld. Josh Simons - Office of the CTO / High Performance Computing, VMware
SEC8667-SPO - Deep Dive into Real-Life Data-Center Breaches and How They Could Have Been Avoided Changing with the times is frequently overlooked when it comes to data center security. Technology is becoming increasingly dynamic, but most data centers still use archaic security measures to protect their network, which doesn't provide sufficient protection against today's sophisticated attacks. Data centers house a huge amount of sensitive data, and thus there shouldn't be any shortcomings when implementing security to protect these environments. The focus has traditionally been on adding protection only at the perimeter to keep threats outside, but implementing perimeter-centric security leaves the inside of the data center vulnerable. Cybercriminals are constantly using advanced techniques to target assets inside the data center. Once inside, they are able to freely propagate their malware against other internal assets. Without upgrading data center security protections with advanced multilayered threat prevention and zero-day protections, hackers gain visibility and access to steal data and disrupt business processes before they are even detected. Join our session where will share more about recent data center breaches -- where lateral movement and sophisticated techniques were used -- and detail how organizations can prevent the next attack by using mirco-segmentation along with advanced multilayered threat prevention in the software-defined data center. Peter Sandkuijl - Head of security solutions Europe, Check Point

HBC8484 - Deploying a Validated Automated VMware Hybrid Cloud This talk and demonstration will show how we have sped up and improved quality to cloud platform delivery by automatically stamping out cloud platforms. This talk will demonstrate this capability and talk to the learned experiences along the way. Companies with large scale on-premise VMware deployments can rapidly extend into the public cloud to establish a hybrid cloud deployment. VMware and IBM have partnered to provide a simple to deploy, full functioning VMware software defined data center (SDDC) deployment on the public cloud which is dedicated to and managed by the customer. This includes vSphere, vSAN, vRealize Suite, and NSX for a fully encompassing compute, storage and networking SDDC. VIRT8708 - Extreme Performance Series: Deep Dive into the Last 1% of Applications with Performance Challenges Today you can virtualize 99% of your application portfolio with vSphere at near-native performance right out-of-the-box. But let’s be blunt: there are some workloads that when virtualized, don’t run at near-native speed out-of-the-box. The good news is that those workloads are fairly rare and that we understand them well enough to discuss how to improve the sometimes noticeable performance difference. This is NOT a rehashing of Performance Best Practices Guides. In this highly advanced performance session, we’ll cover the application corner cases in which virtualization in general, regardless of hypervisor, poses a significant performance challenge. We will explain _why_ a certain operation behaves the way it does when virtualized, how you can identify whether you are affected with on-board tools, and potentially mitigate by hand-tuning those cases. Valentin Bondzio - Staff TSE, VMware
Reza Taheri - Principal Engineer, VMware
VIRT7598 - Extreme Performance Series: Monster VM Database Performance Mission-critical applications represent the last hurdle to organizations looking to migrate their data centers to the cloud. Although IT administrators realize the benefits of virtualization, they may be hesitant to virtualize applications such as databases because of their resource demands, and may even fear that the underlying hypervisor will prevent the infrastructure from meeting the SLAs of these applications. VMware vSphere, the industry's leading hypervisor platform, has been pushing the boundaries of infrastructure resources it can manage over various releases. With its superior resource management capabilities, vSphere can easily scale horizontally to support many virtual machines (VMs) or vertically to support large VMs. vSphere 6 introduces the ability to run virtual machines with up to 128 virtual CPUs (vCPUs) and 4TB of RAM, allowing extreme resource-hungry applications such as databases to be run in VMs. In this talk, the speakers give an overview of key vSphere features such as CPU and NUMA schedulers, and memory managers that propel monster VMs. The speakers will share their benchmark results, experience gained, and lessons learned. A deep dive into Oracle and SQL Server scalability on vSphere 6 on a large, multi-core physical host (4 CPU, 1 TB RAM) will be presented. Finally, the speakers will provide best practices to the audience for undertaking such an exercise. This talk should alleviate any hesitation to migrate resource-hungry, mission-critical database applications to a private cloud. Reza Taheri - Principal Engineer, VMware
INF8108R - Extreme Performance Series: vCenter Performance Deep Dive The VMware vCenter Server is at the heart of your cloud deployment. You need high responsiveness, the ability to accommodate rapid provisioning of virtual machines and applications, and resiliency. While the out-of-the-box settings should work great for all of you, we recognize that there is no single best configuration for everyone. In this talk, we will help you get the most out of vCenter Server from a performance perspective. We will examine the vCenter Server in detail and provide best practices for performance and scale. We start with a refresher course on vCenter Server internals and describe the various functional pieces that make up vCenter Server, starting with vCenter Server 6.0 and providing some insights on future directions. We move on to discuss issues that may impact performance of either vCenter Server or the Web client—for example, interactions between vCenter Server and its database, Java service settings inside vCenter Server, and interactions with applications like VMware vRealize Operations Manager or VMware NSX. We then discuss the salient differences between vCenter Server for Windows and the vCenter Server Appliance. We also describe enhancements that allow larger cluster sizes and higher operational throughput. Finally, we look ahead to future architectural directions that will further enhance the performance and usability of vCenter Server for 2016 and beyond. INF7764-QT - Has the Hypervisor Been Commoditized? One of the most hotly debated subjects in IT today is whether or not the hypervisor has been commoditized. With a slowing global economy, businesses and organizations of all sizes are tightening IT budgets, forcing the question of whether or not they should migrate completely to a platform that is open source or included with an OS that they already own or one that is able to run multiple hypervisors. For example, mission-critical apps deserve the most stable and mature platform, while less important environments like labs or branch offices can get away with the "free" solution. Because the hypervisor is truly the foundation and first step toward building any Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC)/hybrid cloud-or even the public cloud for that matter-the importance of this decision cannot be understated. In this session, we will have an honest talk about the current discussions surrounding hypervisor commoditization and motivators towards running multiple solutions, or all-out migration. We will discuss what other offerings are out there and the advantages and disadvantages of each. We'll also dive into why the hypervisor is so fundamentally important to the success of any SDDC/hybrid cloud and how VMware vSphere is the best solution both technically and financially. Last, we'll uncover the true costs and complexities of running multiple hypervisors and why it usually doesn't make sense to do so. Scott Calvet - Global SDDC/Hybrid Cloud Evangelist, VMware

SEC9385 - How Virtualization Will Transform Security Security spend has been growing twice as fast as IT spend.  It would seem the only thing growing faster than security spend… is security losses.  This spiraling trend shows no evidence of turning around despite massive investment and innovation in security technology.  At the heart of the issue is an architectural gap - between the applications and data we are trying to protect, and the infrastructure from which we are trying to protect them.  Virtualization could be the key to solving this problem — enabling security to be architected-in, rather than bolted on.  Micro-segmentation has opened the door for a wave of innovation — enabling us to see and control the infrastructure through the lens of the application.  But this is only the beginning.  In this session we will discuss the state of the art — as well as the future of security — through virtualization.  We will discuss how organizations are transforming the security strategy today, and we will demonstrate some new technology directions, that extend "least privilege" policy from the network, to compute and data, and from the private cloud, to the public cloud and next gen apps.  Get a glimpse of the future; a more secure future - through virtualization. Tom Corn - SVP, Security Products, VMware

VIRT7507 - How to Design and Tune Virtualized Trading Platforms With recent advances in VMware vSphere 6 performance, we continue to see some of the most serious application workloads being virtualized. It is no longer an issue whether a tier-1 workload can be virtualized, but rather there are companies that are betting their tier-0 on the VMware stack. Société Générale (formerly NewEdge) is one such company, with their main trading platform called NVision running on a fully virtualized cluster servicing some 20 million trades per day. This session will cover various platform architectures that are used, with deep dive into the cluster design for this trading platform. The session will share many best practices and actual examples used with customers that are running such high-end platforms. Specifically, Java Garbage Collection, in-memory databases, vSphere tuning techniques, and rationalization of large deployments having 1000s of VMs and JVMs will be discussed. Come to this session to learn about GC tuning and vSphere recipes that can give you the best configuration for latency sensitive applications for high-end performance platforms. Emad Benjamin - Principal Architect, VMware
SDDC7609-QT - How to Respond to the "Bring Your Own Data Center" Trend Research has shown that business units don't always wait any more until their IT department is finally able to deliver infrastructure as a service; instead they buy it directly themselves. Business units can use their own virtual data center from the cloud: Bring Your Own Data Center (BYODC). They are increasingly turning to Amazon Web Services, Azure, vCloud Air, and other public cloud platforms to run their workloads. Most of the time this starts with development and test workloads, but increasingly occurs for production workloads as well. This causes challenges for the IT department regarding security, management, compliance, and costs. We will address the four common responses from IT departments to BYODC and how successful these responses are. Sean Harris - Senior Business Solutions Strategist, VMware
Richard Bennett - Head of Advisory Services, VMware

EUC9179 - Introducing Horizon Air Hybrid Mode: Low-Cost, Simplified Virtual Desktop and Application Deployment and Management Industry trends such as cloud, mobility, and BYO devices are pushing the boundaries of the end-user workspace beyond the traditional desktop. Organizations are actively looking to implement digital workspaces: the ability to allow end users a simple way to access all their corporate data and applications from any device in a secure way. Virtual desktops and applications play a big role in enabling this transformation, but remain complex and costly to deploy. VMware Horizon Air hybrid mode changes this by addressing the speed and ease with which IT administrators can deploy virtual desktops and applications while providing cost- and performance-optimized infrastructure for workloads that are deployed on the premises, in the cloud, or hybrid. We will take a look at how Horizon Air hybrid mode integrates virtual desktop, application, and other associated technologies; provides a unified, cloud-based management console; and offers a hybrid deployment model combining software-as-a-service (SaaS) benefits with on-premises benefits of compliance and performance. We will look at the technology components, explore sample use cases, take a sneak peek at the product, and discuss the technical details of the solution. SEC7836 - Introduction to Security with VMware NSX The networking industry has been approaching security with an outdated foundational model. Too much focus has been placed on securing the data center perimeter, leaving the inside of the data center relatively unguarded. NSX provides an inherently more secure foundation through the ability to create entire networks fully in software. This enables us to limit the spread of threats inside the data center in a way that is not otherwise possible through micro-segmentation, the use of fine-grained policies and network controls to enable security inside the data center, preventing the lateral spread of threats once they have overcome perimeter defenses. This session covers the SDDC approach to networking and security that gives you the agility and speed you need to support the business, while providing an inherently secure infrastructure. VIRT9402-SPO - Modern Storage Strategies for On-Demand Applications If software is eating the world, SaaS is eating software. Modern businesses are re-writing the rules of application delivery and deployment. As DevOps and container technologies such as Docker grow in popularity, enterprises rely on disruptively simple deployments, eliminating the need to build an application delivery infrastructure. However, SaaS providers that are starting to create their own infrastructure are faced with a range of options for designing a modern, flexible and scalable storage strategy. This panel will explore how virtualization technologies drive and enable IT infrastructure that delivers applications-as-a-service. SaaS businesses' pay-as-you go model requires virtualization at the compute layer for servers and desktops. Scaling up and down, to meet application user demand requires flexible compute deployments that greatly benefit from containerization. As the data foundation for the online business, storage must deliver scale and performance as the compute paradigm evolves, while cost-effectively providing continuous data availability. NET8030 - NSX Performance Deep Dive What kind of performance can one really expect from the network virtualization solution: VMware NSX? Can we expect NSX to take advantage of and drive throughput saturating 40Gb Ethernet network cards? What features should be considered? What parameters should be tuned? What kind of latency can we expect? If these are some of the questions you are looking answers for to, then this is the session for you. This session will walk you through real world performance expectations and results for NSX, a network virtualization solution helping customers implement networking and security services in software on commodity network and compute infrastructure. We will take a look at the characteristics of physical and virtual networking devices-how are they similar and what makes them different-and benchmarking considerations when testing NSX. Wade Holmes - Sr. Technical Product Manager, VMware
NET8935 - NSX for Small Data Centers-Breaking Boundaries NSX reference guide recommends best practices and design choices that one should consider for design and deployment. For instance, it recommends having three clusters: management, compute, and edge. But what if you have a flat or single-cluster vSphere design that cannot be changed. Or your data center footprint is very small and you do not have enough compute resources for separate cluster? Or maybe you have multiple small Data Centers based on your business requirements. Or you want to deploy NSX in small DC to provide DR. Does this mean you cannot deploy NSX? The answer is, no, not at all. NSX is for everyone, every use-case and every data center. So how do you design and deploy NSX with confidence in small DCs? That is what we will be talking about in this session. Shahzad Ali - NSX Solutions Architect, VMware
Brian Muita - CTO, Node Africa
EUC9217 - On-Premises Workloads with Cloud-Based Management: Technical Deep Dive into Horizon Air Hybrid Mode Benefits of desktop virtualization are clear, and adoption is on the rise with the move to cloud, mobility, and BYO devices. But organizations are looking for smarter solutions that are easier to deploy, are cost effective, and allow flexibility of deployment. What is desired is an approach that brings the benefits of the cloud, such as software as a service (SaaS), coupled with infrastructure as a service (IaaS) for ease of infrastructure management. VMware Horizon Air hybrid mode does just that by delivering a hybrid cloud software service hosted by VMware, which enables organizations to deliver virtual desktops and manage applications from on-premises infrastructure, while centrally managing it all from the cloud. The advantage of this solution is that the desktop capacity resides in the customers' data center (similar to Horizon 7), but all of the administration will be done from the cloud (like Horizon Air). HBC9611-SPO - OnApp: your hybrid cloud delivered The way enterprises deploy, manage and use cloud infrastructure is changing. Successful service providers will be those that adopt a hybrid cloud model which actually delivers what enterprises are looking for. Instead of treating on-premise and service provider cloud as separate worlds - with the occasional need to burst from the former to the latter - enterprise clients are adopting a much more fluid approach. The hybrid cloud model, for an enterprise, needs to deliver the ability to optimize workload placement for price, performance, compliance, scale and locality - in real time - according to business need. That requires an all-encompassing approach to cloud management, that embraces multiple hypervisor technologies, multiple server types, and multiple locations across on-premise private cloud infrastructure, and service provider public clouds. It requires bringing all these service types into a single management and provisioning environment, where workloads can be deployed and moved to the best infrastructure, on the best virtualization platform, in the best location for the task at hand. And it requires the hybrid cloud to act as a glue that enables enterprises to pool their private resources, and service providers to pool their public resources - bringing them together in a way that guarantees security, transparency and fluidity. This session will explore the business and technology characteristics of this hybrid cloud model, and show how OnApp's hybrid multi-cloud, multi-hypervisor, federated approach to a cloud management platform enables vCAN partners to offer the fluidity and control their enterprise customers need - for the mutual benefit of everyone in the hybrid cloud ecosystem. VIRT7511R - Performance Tuning and Monitoring for Virtualized Database Servers Business-critical database platforms like Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server are among the last holdouts to enterprise virtualization, and the first to exhibit symptoms of infrastructure challenges. Is your VMware environment ready to accommodate them properly? Are your DBAs ready to virtualize them? Have you virtualized these, and now the DBAs complain about performance or lack of control? Successful virtualization of these platforms requires a different approach to virtualization than for other applications. The speakers will share their years of experience in virtualizing these data platforms so that you know how to validate your VMware environment for these systems and manage the performance properly. Scalability concerns will be addressed through discussions on scaling an individual database VM upwards and outwards as you manage the lifecycle of these database VMs. Key talking points will be presented so you can not only perfect the database virtualization from a technical level, but also from an organizational and people level by knowing how to convince the DBA that database virtualization -- done right -- is here to stay. STO7953 - The Future is Here: Turbocharge All Flash Virtual SAN with Next Generation Hardware The future of storage is here. Flash is clearly gaining more and more prominence in enterprise storage. The evolution of high speed flash-based storage combined with high speed networks has had a significant impact on the Hyper Converged Infrastructure (HCI) market. In this session, we will discuss how we leverage newer hardware technologies to enable the fastest and most efficient hyper converged infrastructure solution with All Flash Virtual SAN. We will start with key design considerations for achieving the best performance with All Flash HCI. In doing so, we will go over real world customer use cases, key sizing guidelines and share performance metrics for high performance computing workloads driven by NVMe for Virtual SAN All Flash. We will then move on to analyzing benefits of adopting Non Volatile DIMMs and RDMA for Virtual SAN. Historically, the All Flash market was driven by "purpose-built" appliances with custom hardware to enable faster caching and reduce overall disk+network latencies. It was not considered feasible to do this in standard x86 servers connected on standard ethernet networks. Until recently, that is. Newer standards and technologies such as NVMe 1.2, Persistent DIMMs and RDMA over converged ethernet are expected to become standard in the OEM server market and will be driven by commoditization. We will go over benefits of adopting these high speed storage and network interconnects in the future for Virtual SAN. As cliched as this may sound, you are already part of this highly disruptive market. So what are you waiting for? Come and join us if you want to learn how VMware plans to lead market disruption with its turbocharged All Flash Virtual SAN offering by taking advantage of newer hardware technologies for HCI. The future is here: Are you? Rakesh Radhakrishnan - Product Management & Strategy Leader, VMware

CNA8986 - The How and Why vSphere Integrated Containers is the Best Way to Run Containers Docker has taken the IT world by storm and is now one of the most popular tools with which to deploy applications. Over the last three years it has gained a lot of momentum with developers. They use Docker to build and deploy applications. But what works fine in a developer environment needs to be taken into production at some point. That is when IT operations take over and need to figure out how to run Docker containers within the infrastructure. The question then becomes: How do you run Docker containers on your existing VMware vSphere infrastructure? That is where vSphere Integrated Containers comes into play. In this session we will walk you through the architecture of how to run Docker on vSphere with vSphere Integrated Containers. We will give you an introduction on how the technology works and how vSphere Integrated Containers is different from running containers without the tight integration with vSphere. We will show you that vSphere Integrated Containers is the ideal way to host Docker containers on vSphere and that it does not change anything for the people who consume Docker containers, but gives IT operations the tools that it already knows to manage the vSphere environment. We will also demo how vSphere Integrated Containers works and share with you the best practices that we have gained in the field over the last year at enterprise customers. With this shared knowledge and expertise, hopefully you will be able to design and implement vSphere Integrated Containers in your environment. Luc Dekens - Systems Engineer, Eurocontrol
PAR3707 - The Power of Two: EUC with NSX Many customers look to desktop virtualization as a solution to protect mission-critical data that is stored on endpoint devices. By moving such data to the data center, customers hope to gain better protection against threats and breaches, however most data centers only secure so-called “North-South” traffic, namely traffic entering and leaving the data-center. Today, the vast majority of traffic within data centers is between virtual machines, so-called “East-West” traffic. Virtual desktops can therefore expose a very large attack surface within the data center, where traffic can flow freely between virtual desktops and other critical infrastructure. Organizations with a focus on compliance and risk mitigation must be able to protect east-west flows within the data center and need the flexibility of granular security zones. This session is for the experienced end-user computing architect who wants to gain knowledge and insight into how VMware NSX amplifies the agility and security posture of a VMware Horizon View deployment. This session will begin at a high level, but will dive deep into the design and architecture nuances that are part of a successful micro-segmentation and network virtualization design within a Horizon infrastructure.
